Lecture 1: Introduction to Power and Politics in Today’s World

Professor Ian Shapiro introduces the class “Power and Politics in Today’s World.” This course provides an examination of political dynamics and institutions over this past tumultuous quarter century, and the implications of these changes for what comes next. Among the topics covered are the decline of trade unions and enlarged role of business as political forces, changing attitudes towards parties and other political institutions amidst the growth of inequality and middle-class insecurity, the emergence of new forms of authoritarianism, and the character and durability of the unipolar international order that replaced the Cold War. How did we get from the huge euphoria that followed the fall of communism in the early 1990s to our present politics of fear and resentment, and what are the prospects going forward? This DeVane Lecture series course entitled “Power and Politics in Today’s World” with Professor Ian Shapiro answered some of those questions. This course in the fall of 2019 was open to Yale students and the general public. Ian Shapiro is the Sterling Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs at Yale University. He has written widely and influentially on democracy, justice, and the methods of social inquiry. The DeVane Lecture series was established in 1969 to honor William Clyde DeVane, dean of Yale College from 1939 to 1963. Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300) In this first lecture, Professor Paul Fry explores the course's title in three parts. The relationship between theory and philosophy, the question of what literature is and does, and what constitutes an introduction are interrogated. These principles apply to lectures in the K-12 classroom as much as they to lecturing in college or lecturing on Zoom. A good lecture is cast in a narrative arc, has kinetic energy abounding, and aims for the affections of the students. Admittedly, some of these principles are difficult to apply if you still have to lecture with a mask, but the difficulty does not diminish the principles. Prof. Tony Lynch - The Importance of Listening to International Students

Professor Tony Lynch, Personal Chair of Student Learning (English for Academic Purposes), presented his inaugural lecture entitled "The Importance of Listening to International Students". The title is intentionally ambiguous. It refers firstly to the importance for international students of having adequate comprehension of spoken English; and it also alludes to the importance for the University of taking account of international students' perceptions of studying at Edinburgh. In the lecture, Prof Lynch addresses both these issues. In the first part he draws on his research into the experience of second language listeners, in order to outline the processes underlying comprehension, the problems likely to arise, and possible solutions to those difficulties. In the second part he discuss postgraduates' responses to an ELTC (English Language Teaching Centre) survey on linguistic and cultural aspects of studying at Edinburgh. He argues that relatively minor adjustments by and for international students would help smooth their path to academic success.
